I was 8 years old when I had my first creative block. I remember sitting at the dining table. My mom gave me a fresh piece of paper and some colored pencils. I looked at the paper and... nothing. I tried to start drawing but my hand just froze. Nothing happened.
Looking back, something did happen: I had my first creative block!
I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to picture something in my mind’s eye. But nothing came up.
When I opened my eyes again, the first thing I saw were pink flowers in a vase on the other side of the table.
That was it!
I took my pencils and started drawing the flowers (note that I was 8 so it probably looked nothing like the flowers, but that’s not the point here).
I still use this hack whenever I get stuck in a project, and now you can try this too:
🙈 Close your eyes for a while
🧘🏻♀️ Try to focus on your breathing
👀 Then, open your eyes
🖌️ Draw the first thing you see!
It doesn’t matter if the subject has nothing to do with the project you’re working on. It will definitely kick-start your creative flow.
